Namibia has made notable progress in strengthening gender equality and inclusivity, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and innovation (STI). However, many challenges remain, particularly for women and girls in rural communities and science careers. A new report supported by the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) outlines how Namibia can tap into 100% of its human development potential for sustainable socio-economic growth.

Key Gaps and Challenges

Despite a strong legal foundation, gender disparities persist across STI:

  • Low representation of women in STEM fields: Women are underrepresented in engineering, technology, and natural sciences, while more women are concentrated in social sciences and education.
  • Drop-off after education: More women enrol in tertiary education, but fewer advance into professional STEM careers.
  • Persistent social norms: Traditional roles and discrimination limit women’s progression and leadership opportunities in STI.
  • Lack of data: Gender-disaggregated data is limited, making it hard to track progress and develop targeted interventions.

What’s Working?

Namibia’s policy landscape offers a solid base for transformation:

  • The revised National STI Policy (2020–2030) includes gender equity as a guiding principle.
  • The National Gender Policy and Affirmative Action Act promote women’s rights in education and employment.
  • Programmes like WiSci Girls Camps, NAMWIE, and FAWENA encourage girls to pursue science and support women in STEM careers.

Recommendations for Inclusive Growth

To build more gender equality in Namibian STI system, the report calls for:

  • Clearer targeting: Policies should specify marginalised groups (e.g., rural women or people with disabilities) for more effective action.
  • Strengthening career pipelines: Support girls from primary school through to STEM careers, with mentorship and leadership training.
  • Improved data collection: Track gender, location, and socio-economic indicators in research participation and funding.
  • Ongoing support and collaboration: Engage key stakeholders including government, universities, and civil society to ensure shared responsibility.

Moving Forward to Promote Gender Equality in Namibia

Namibia is on the path toward becoming a knowledge-based economy. To reach this goal, it must fully include all voices—especially women and girls—in its science and innovation systems. By addressing existing gaps and acting on inclusive policies, Namibia can achieve equitable, sustainable development for all.
