Science Granting Council

Summary

To ensure the sustainability of the country’s development by creating an environment in which innovation systems are implemented.

Council details

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT) in Ethiopia plays a leading role in advancing national development through science, technology, and innovation. Its core mission is to foster an environment where innovation systems flourish, contributing to sustainable economic growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods.

Engagement with the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI)

Ethiopia has been an active partner in the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) since its inception. The country participated in SGCI’s initial needs assessment studies and has continued to engage in its capacity-building programmes.

Through SGCI, over 30 universities in Ethiopia benefited from online training in research management. These sessions aimed to strengthen institutional capacities and improve research governance.

Advancing collaboration and funding opportunities

Ethiopia’s involvement in SGCI also provides important opportunities for regional and international collaboration. Ethiopian researchers have worked with other SGCI member countries on joint funding proposals, including applications to the European Union and other donors.

The country also participated in the COVID-19 Africa Rapid Grant Fund, enabling researchers to contribute to solutions addressing the pandemic’s impact across sub-Saharan Africa. Such initiatives support knowledge exchange, regional cooperation, and the mobilisation of new funding streams.
