Research and innovation have an important role to play in Sierra Leone’s socio-economic development. As the country works to diversify its economy and address national development challenges, strengthening research capacity, innovation systems and funding mechanisms will be critical to achieving long-term growth and resilience.
Sierra Leone has made progress through national policies and institutional reforms that support science, technology and innovation (STI). However, further investment is needed to ensure research can effectively contribute to national priorities and sustainable development.
Main barriers to research and innovation
Despite growing recognition of the value of research and innovation, several challenges continue to limit progress. Limited research funding, inadequate infrastructure, skills shortages and fragmented governance structures all affect the country’s ability to generate and apply research effectively.
Many institutions also face constraints related to laboratory facilities, access to research tools and technology, and opportunities for professional development. Addressing these gaps will be essential to strengthening the country’s research and innovation landscape.
Strengthening research capacity and infrastructure
Developing strong research infrastructure and skilled human resources is a priority for Sierra Leone. Investment in laboratories, digital tools, research facilities and training opportunities can help improve research quality and increase the country’s capacity to respond to societal and economic challenges.
