Funding call
The South African National Research Foundation (NRF), in partnership with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), is announcing a call for the NRF-SASAC doctoral scholarship for 2026.
In 2022, IIASA increased its membership footprint through the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Member Organization (SSARMO), as part of a regional approach to participation in IIASA research and capacity-building activities.
The new SSARMO includes South Africa and 17 other African countries participating in the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in Sub-Saharan Africa.

SSARMO is implemented through the Sub-Saharan African Systems Analysis Centre (SASAC), which among others will provide training opportunities for candidates based in SGCI member countries.
Additional information and call documents are available as part of the DSI-NRF postgraduate student funding for the 2026 academic year on the NRF website: DSTI-NRF Postgraduate Scholarship Framework for 2026 Funding.
The NRF will host a virtual webinar on the postgraduate funding call on Thursday, 26 June 2025, at 11:00 (SAST) for applicants in SSARMO countries.
The session will cover the application process, eligibility, funding principles, and student progress reporting.
All prospective applicants are encouraged to attend.
