Burkina Faso is taking important steps to improve its science, technology, and innovation (STI) system. However, low investment and weak coordination continue to slow progress. A recent study supported by the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) explores how the country can build a stronger and more inclusive research funding ecosystem.
Why Research and Innovation Funding Matters in Burkina Faso
Although Burkina Faso has adopted several STI policies and created the National Fund for Research and Innovation for Development (FONRID), funding remains critically low—just 0.25% of GDP. Without strong financial support, research cannot meaningfully contribute to national development, poverty reduction, or job creation.
Key Challenges Identified
The study found several obstacles to building an effective STI system:
- Insufficient funding from government and limited private sector involvement
- Poor infrastructure and lack of advanced research facilities
- Weak linkages between research institutions, the private sector, and policymakers
- Limited capacity in areas such as grant management, communication, and policy influence
These issues make it difficult to turn research into practical solutions for the country’s most pressing needs.
Opportunities for Change
Despite these challenges, Burkina Faso has made progress:
- FONRID supports applied research in agriculture, health, technology, and social sciences.
- Several policies now prioritise innovation, including the National Economic and Social Development Plan.
- Collaboration with international partners like IDRC, SGCI, and the EU is growing.
Recommendations for a Stronger System
To improve the research and innovation environment, the report recommends:
- Increase public and private funding for STI
- Train staff and researchers in grant management, communication, and IP rights
- Strengthen partnerships across government, private sector, and civil society
- Develop better monitoring systems to track impact and guide decisions
Looking Ahead
With stronger political will, sustainable funding, and inclusive governance, Burkina Faso can build a more dynamic STI system. This will not only support innovation but also help transform the country’s economy and improve the lives of its people.
