In this interview, Gift Kadzamira, Director-General of Malawi’s National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), outlines the substantial benefits the country’s research ecosystem has gained through the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI).
As an early SGCI member since 2015, Malawi has experienced notable growth and transformation.
The initiative has provided essential training that has enhanced the skills of researchers and commission staff in areas such as monitoring and evaluation, brand management, ethics, and grant administration.
Kadzamira highlights the positive outcomes of capacity-building workshops, crediting SGCI with laying the foundation for the creation of Malawi’s dedicated science and technology fund in 2022.
This fund was established in recognition of SGCI’s role in nurturing impactful scientific work.
Established in 2003 and operational since 2009, the NCST supports, promotes, coordinates, and regulates research, science, technology, and innovation in Malawi.
It also advises government and stakeholders in line with the national Science and Technology Policy, which is currently being revised to reflect evolving trends.
One of the commission’s key roles is to coordinate research activities, addressing the fragmentation that once characterized the sector.
It also serves as a regulatory body, ensuring that research proposals align with national priorities and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development. Watch the full interview with Gift Kadzamira to explore Malawi’s science and innovation journey.
