This video spotlights the ongoing efforts of the Fonds National de la Recherche et de l’Innovation pour le Développement (FONRID) in Burkina Faso, underscoring its commitment to strengthening research capacity and promoting gender inclusivity.

In the interview, FONRID’s Project Leader, Djibril Yonli, discusses how the organization is actively working to dismantle barriers that hinder women’s participation in science.

Since its inception in 2011—and especially after joining the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in 2015—FONRID has made significant progress in aligning its activities with SGCI’s core themes.

FONRID now focuses on integrating gender into its funding mechanisms to ensure equitable access to resources for gender-related research.

Through its partnership with SGCI’s gender unit, the organization continuously reflects on and refines its funding model to promote diversity.

The council also provides vital support to scientists, researchers, and students, including funding for research projects, laboratory equipment, and participation in scientific events.

Beyond funding, FONRID emphasizes capacity building and strategic communication.

It creates platforms to encourage girls’ participation in science and works to enhance its national, regional, and global visibility. Collaboration with other councils, such as Senegal’s, and efforts to attract private sector funding remain key priorities.

While acknowledging the progress made so far, Yonli says the journey toward a fully inclusive and robust research ecosystem is ongoing.

He says FONRID plays a pivotal role in driving evidence-based policymaking and fostering economic and social development in Burkina Faso.

Watch the full interview with Djibril Yonli to learn how FONRID is building capacity, promoting gender diversity, and positioning Burkina Faso on the global research map.
