Kenya’s research fund launches data security training

The National Research Fund (NRF) Kenya has launched a research data security training workshop, highlighting its commitment to strengthening the quality, integrity, and impact of publicly funded research across the country.

The workshop convened experts from universities, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), and research institutions to build practical skills in safeguarding research data, intellectual property, and institutional expertise.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders within Kenya’s research ecosystem, the training aims to promote a shared responsibility for protecting valuable scientific outputs.

In his opening remarks, NRF chief executive officer Dickson Andala described the protection of research outputs as a national imperative.

He emphasised that safeguarding research data is critical to maintaining public trust in science, supporting economic growth, and ensuring that research investments deliver lasting development impact.

The sessions focus on key areas, including data governance frameworks, international best practices in research security, and disclosure requirements.

Participants are engaging in active discussions on integrating robust security protocols into everyday research management processes – from proposal development and data collection to publication and knowledge transfer.

The Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) continues to emphasise the importance of capacity strengthening in research management systems, including responsible data governance and security.

As part of its broader mandate to enhance the effectiveness of science granting councils, SGCI supports investments in training and institutional frameworks that protect research outputs, promote transparency, and strengthen accountability in the stewardship of public research funds.

The training, which continues through 13 February, forms part of NRF’s broader efforts to ensure that Kenyan research remains secure, credible, and globally competitive. By strengthening institutional capacity in research data protection, the Fund is reinforcing its mandate to steward public resources responsibly while positioning Kenya’s research community for sustained impact at national and international levels.
