Mary Abukutsa, uma das principais investigadoras de legumes ind\u00edgenas africanos (AIVs) da Universidade de Agricultura e Tecnologia Jomo<\/a> Kenyatta (JKUAT) e benefici\u00e1ria de um fundo de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o da Iniciativa dos Conselhos de Concess\u00e3o de Ci\u00eancia (SGCI), foi nomeada laureada com o Pr\u00e9mio Africano da Alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o de 2025 pelo seu trabalho inovador na promo\u00e7\u00e3o dos legumes ind\u00edgenas africanos.<\/p>\n\n

O an\u00fancio foi feito em Dakar, Senegal, durante o F\u00f3rum de Sistemas Alimentares de \u00c1frica 2025, na quarta-feira, 3 de setembro, onde Abukutsa e Mercy Diebiru-Ojo, uma inovadora de sementes da Nig\u00e9ria, foram declarados vencedores conjuntos do Pr\u00e9mio Alimentar de \u00c1frica no valor de 100.000 d\u00f3lares.<\/p>\n\n

Atrav\u00e9s do Fundo Nacional de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o do Qu\u00e9nia, a SGCI apoiou o projeto de Abukutsa -UpscalingAfrican Indigenous Vegetables Climate Smart Technologies for Food and Nutrition Security in Kenya’.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

O projeto foi lan\u00e7ado em 2023. A iniciativa dirige-se aos agricultores dos condados de Kakamega e Kiambu, promovendo o cultivo da erva-moura africana e da malva-juta com recurso a tecnologias inteligentes do ponto de vista clim\u00e1tico e a variedades de sementes registadas. <\/p>\n\n

Abukutsa, professor de horticultura na JKUAT, est\u00e1 a liderar o projeto em parceria com a Universidade de Ci\u00eancia e Tecnologia Masinde Muliro e a Rede Econ\u00f3mica Inter-Regional, Growthpad, uma empresa de exporta\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n

O seu objetivo \u00e9 refor\u00e7ar a seguran\u00e7a alimentar e nutricional, cada vez mais amea\u00e7ada pelas altera\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas, atrav\u00e9s da produ\u00e7\u00e3o sustent\u00e1vel, da comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o e da utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de vegetais ind\u00edgenas africanos.<\/p>\n\n

Ao promover legumes ricos em nutrientes com t\u00e9cnicas inteligentes em termos clim\u00e1ticos, a equipa de Abukutsa est\u00e1 a criar sistemas alimentares resistentes ao clima que nutrem as comunidades, gerando simultaneamente novas fontes de rendimento para os agricultores, em especial para as mulheres produtoras.<\/p>\n\n
