Theme 1: Strengthening the research management capacity of Africa’s Science Granting Councils

Supporting Councils to strengthen their capacity in research management in a number of key areas, such as: grant-making systems and procedures; principles of scientific merit review; STI policy analysis and research priority setting; design and management of science and technology cooperation agreements; effective communication of research results; mapping of science and innovation funding; alignment of publicly funded research with the needs of the private sector; and implementation of new modes of scientific practices, such as open science. Technical expertise in implementing activities associated with this theme is provided by:

Theme 2: Strengthening Africa’s Science Granting Councils as champions of indicators in public policy making
Supporting Councils to design and monitor research programmes and to formulate and implement policies based on the use of robust science, technology and innovation indicators. Technical expertise in implementing activities associated with this theme is provided by:

Theme 3: Strengthening partnerships among Africa’s Science Granting Councils and the private sector
Supporting Councils to establish partnerships with other Councils and to foster public-private linkages in research for accelerated socio-economic development. Technical expertise in implementing activities associated with this theme is provided by:

Theme 4: Building partnerships and networks among Science Granting Councils and other science system actors in Sub-Saharan Africa through annual regional meetings and forums 
Building partnerships and networks among Science Granting Councils and other science system actors by planning and organising Annual Regional Meetings (ARMs) and Annual Forums (AFs) in order to achieve increasingly coordinated and networked Councils in Africa. These meetings are organised in partnership with the African Union Commission - New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUC-NEPAD), Science Granting Councils, and Regional Economic Communities. Technical expertise in implementing activities associated with this theme is provided by:
