A focus on system wide research management support for SARIMA’s Ethiopia in-country training

SARIMA’s 5-day in-country training for the Ministry of Science and Technology of Ethiopia (MoST) was concluded on 7 April 2017. Held in Addis Ababa, the training focused on the practical aspects of research and grants management and was led by SARIMA trainers, Prof Thandi Mgwebi (Director of Research: University of the Western Cape, South Africa) and Dr Tembeka Mpako – Ntusi (Former Director of Research: Walter Sisulu University, South Africa).

MoST invitation to the training of not only its staff but also its stakeholders from Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa Science & Technology University, Adama Science & Technology University, the Science, Technology & Information Center, the Bio-Technology Institute and the Ethiopian Space Science Institute strengthens these linkages, and supports greater knowledge sharing on the grant making function of the ministry and recipient research performing organisations.

Mr. Abdurazaq Omer, Technology Advisor to the Minister of Science and Technology and Dr Eshetie Abebe, Director General for Capacity Building, Policy Research and Future Planning set the tone of training as one that is aimed to not only strengthen capacities for research and grant management within the ministry and in its stakeholder organisations but also to encourage open dialogue amongst the participants. As such, the SARIMA training was structured to ensure a stronger focus on simulations and experience sharing.

The programme concluded with an action setting session and closing remarks from the Honourable State Minister of Science and Technology, Prof Afework Kassu Gisaw.
